Hexalas are small pieces of art made to be created, shared, and discovered.

the idea

What is a Hexala?

A Hexala begins as a small hexagonal coloring design.

You color it however you want. Initial it. Then you can keep it, give it to someone, add it to a community installation, or leave it somewhere for a stranger to discover.

Each Hexala is a tiny invitation to create, connect, and play. The Hexala Project brings these individual pieces together through pop-up workshops, public art, community installations, and Hexalas released into the world.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Choose one.

    Pick a Hexala design.

  2. 2

    Color it.

There is no right way to make a Hexala.

  3. 3

    Make it yours.

    Initial your Hexala.

  4. 4

    Keep it or share it.

Turn it into a magnet or button, add it to an installation, give it away, or leave it somewhere for someone else to discover.

  5. 5

    See where it goes.

Follow The Hexala Project as Hexalas begin appearing in public spaces and communities.

A small piece of art can travel a long way.

The Hexala Project is an experiment in creativity, connection, play, and generosity.

What happens when people make something simply for the pleasure of making it — and then release it into the world?

A Hexala might live on someone's refrigerator. It might become part of a community mural. It might be handed to a friend. Or it might be left on a park bench, coffee shop table, Little Free Library, or other public place for a stranger to discover.

Thousands of individual Hexalas can eventually become a constantly changing collaborative work of art.

about the project

Small canvas. Big idea.

The Hexala Project began in Arlington, Virginia, as a simple idea: give people a small canvas, invite them to make something, and see what happens when those creations are shared.

It is part art project, part community experiment, and part invitation to play.
